This is very difficult for us to write. It is also very difficult for us to do. What you are about to read may well spell the end for our
successful company - we hope not.
But we cannot carry on like this. In fact, we are happy to make this stand, to take this position and to commit to this promise,
regardless of the consequences:
We have decided not to make our bags from leather ever again.
From the pristine beauty of the Amazon rainforest, to animal waste destroying streams, rivers and lakes in Ireland to the massive
environmental damage caused by leather production in India and China – we cannot carry on like this.
Although our company is tiny and the difference our decision makes is tiny, we still make a difference and even small differences
matter. We want to work with Nature, not against her and we are delighted to have sourced an all-natural product that we can offer
to customers with a clear conscience for us and for them. It feels the right thing to do. We are now working with a material made
from pineapple leaves. The material is robust, easy to work with, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
As a product to replace leather, pineapple leaves tick just about every environmentally friendly box, whereas leather production on
the other hand uses dangerous chemicals, is harmful to the planet, and, of necessity involves the death of animals.
Every time you buy one of our bags, you are not only helping the planet, but you are also providing an additional income stream to
poor pineapple farmers in the Philippines. Previously, these farmers would discard the leaves from pineapples as having no value
or use. Well, now, those leaves are sold to a co-operative which sells them to companies looking for new materials to work with
and our bags are made from this material.
We will still employ the same production techniques, the same commitment to UK bag manufacture and the same commitment to
high-quality which have made our leather bags so popular around the globe.
Pineapple leaves are a fabulous alternative to leather. They are vegan, environmentally benign, perfect for our product range and,
crucially, cruelty free. From now on that will be the direction of travel.
We want you to look good without feeling bad and we want to make good stuff that doesn’t hurt the planet or its creatures.
